Food Fotos

What's Paris without the opportunity to enjoy the food?  Answer: Just another big city.

Calf's liver a la Provencale at A La Biche Au Bois.  For those who don't care about liver, move on to the next photo.

Our favorite restaurant on the Left Bank is Le Petite Saint Benoit.  I had beef bourgogne.

Susanne had escargot.

Le Petit St. Benoit is one of the older restaurants in Paris, first opening at this location in 1901.  For years, they did a daily menu using ditto master, but alas, no more.  Must've run out.

You have a paper table cloth; they write your order on it.

We can even decode it:  X6 is Susanne's 6 escargot.  The BB is my Beef Bourgogne.

And the zero with the hash mark is the carafe d'eau, the free tap water that all restaurants must make available by law.

A new & very nice trend...the better places provide chilled carafe d'eau.  Ice cubes?  Forget it!!!!

One of my favorite Paris meals is choucroute (sauerkraut) which isn't really French at all. I love the meats & sausages that come with it.

There's a French expression: Pédeler dans la choucroute.  It means something like "spinning your wheels", "getting nowhere".  Literally, it means "pedaling in the sauerkraut."

Susanne had onion soup.  Served steaming hot.   Yummmm.

For dessert we shared a chocolat liegois, a chocoholic's delight, although the one we had at Biche (but forgot to photograph) was better.

At Madam Tan's Korean place, we had the grilled beef.

There's a restaurant the specializes in Pot au Feu, literally Fire Pot.  Sort of a one plate meal with a cheap but cooked til tender cut of beef.  More of a winter meal.

Their pride is serving a big bone with marrow.

Under the wooden tongs are cornichons, a classic French style pickle.  I made a serious dent in their pickle jar.

We forgot to photograph the steak tartare & frites (fries) that I had and a croque monsieur for Susanne...in the town of Fontainebleau after the tour.  The CM is a broiled ham & emmental cheese sandwich with the cheese both inside and on top of the bread.

Bistro Romain is a popular priced Italian chain, sort of a Paris version of Olive Garden.  They're always busy.

Leon de Bruxelles is our go-to place for Moules et Frites (mussles & fries).  There were a bunch of guys wearing white hats standing around with the word Greve on the hat.  That means a labor protest.  To get the details, Susanne waded in (can you see her in the group on the right?) to get details.  Yes, they are protesting the low wages paid Leon employees.

We stumbled upon a raclette restaurant in this area that we'll have to get to one of these evenings.

A croque madame which is a croque monsieur with an egg on top.

A ham & cheese four-egg omelet & side salad.

The pink bottle is not a Rose...it is a carafe d'eau.

Paris food shops, the patisseries and boulangeries often have gorgeous displays such as these two:
